Kentucky 31 (K31) Tall Fescue is a widely used, coarse-textured, cool-season perennial grass valued for its exceptional hardiness, adaptability, and low maintenance requirements. Its Latin name is Festuca arundinacea (also known as Schedonorus arundinaceus). K31 is commonly used for pasture and forage production, utility and rural lawns, roadside and right-of-way plantings, erosion control, and soil stabilization, particularly where drought tolerance, heat resistance, and poor soil performance are important. While it is less refined in appearance than turf-type tall fescues, it is highly durable and persistent. Recommended seeding rates are 6–10 lb per 1,000 sq ft for new lawn establishment, 3–5 lb per 1,000 sq ft for overseeding, and 150–200 lb per acre for pasture, conservation, or large-scale utility plantings, with higher rates often used on slopes or challenging sites to ensure rapid, uniform coverage.
